Stony Brook University Launches Executive MBA For Law Firm Managers

An Executive MBA program targeting law firm managers - the first of its kind in the nation - will be offered by Stony Brook University's College of Business beginning in April, 2006. Classes will be held at Friday afternoons and Saturday morning every other week for 23 months at Stony Brook-Manhattan, located at Park Avenue South and 28th Street in New York City.

"There is growing recognition that traditional management principles may not always apply in a law firm setting," said William H. Turner, Dean of the College of Business. "But until now business schools have not specifically addressed this audience of law firm managers."

The University has formed an advisory board for the program made up of 22 law firm leaders from major firms including chairmen, managing partners, and executive directors.

Firms on the Board include Sullivan & Cromwell; Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP; Debevoise & Plimpton; Schulte Roth & Zabel; Proskauer Rose LLP; Milbank Tweed; Fried Frank; Dewey Ballantine; Wachtell Lipton; Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; White & Case, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. The program consultants are Lynn Glasser and Stephen Glasser, who are nationally known for developing continuing legal education seminars and short courses in law firm management.

The curriculum will offer a broad range of core course offerings including communications, finance, human resources, leadership and organizational behavior, managerial economics, marketing, operations management, and strategy. Students also will take elective courses centered on areas of concentration in business management/finance, human resources, marketing, and technology.

The EMBA is designed to be of great value to senior law firm managers and "functional" managers and those who are being groomed for senior management positions such as executive directors, financial officials, marketing officers, technology and CIO directors, human resource officials, librarians, litigation support and practice group managers, attorneys with management responsibility, and other law firm business executives.
