Should women lawyers mirror the courtroom and boardroom communication styles of their male counterparts. The New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) this month will attempt to answer that and related questions in a CLE seminar titled Breaking the Gender Barrier ... Communication Skills to Enhance Your Credibility & Authority as a Woman Lawyer - in the Courtroom & the Boardroom.
The program will take place on Thursday, August 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center, Ryders Lane Exit off Route One, New Brunswick, NJ.
The featured speaker will be Dr. Anita Jacobs, president of the National Center for Effective Speaking. She will show how women can establish immediate credibility with colleagues, adversaries, the judge and jury by understanding how the different messages conveyed by body language, voice and appearance can impair or improve verbal communication.
Attendees will learn how to say what they mean, add authority to their words, break free of communications weaknesses, and present themselves assertively.
Specific discussion topics will include:
- Establishing credibility in the office, courtroom and boardroom;
- Understanding male/female communications differences;
- How to let your competence show before the judge and jury;
- Establishing interpersonal communication with your clients, colleagues and adversaries;
- How to say what you mean and add power to your point;
- The people reading process and how to use people reading skills to select your jury;
- Relating across cultural lines.
