Program Will Examine Broker-Dealer Insolvency



The DC Bar Association this month will present a CLE seminar titled Broker-Dealer Insolvencies - What Causes Them and How to Handle the Liquidation.


The program will take place on Thursday, April 15 from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the DC Bar Conference Center, 1250 H St, Washington, DC.


This course will provide an introduction to broker-dealer insolvencies, information on the cause of these insolvencies, and the warning signs of distress.


To conclude, the faculty will provide an overview of how a broker-dealer firm is liquidated under the SIPA, including the role of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, the role of the trustee, customer protection and its limitations, coverage afforded to claims and potential litigation arising from the liquidation. The discussion will include real case examples and hypothetical case studies.

Harbeck, president, Securities Investor Protection Corporation; James Giddens, Hughes Hubbard & Reed, and Irving Picard, Gibbons, Del Deo, Dolan, Griffinger & Vecchione, P.C.
