The New York State Bar Association's (NYSBA) Corporate Counsel Section is readying its first Corporate Counsel Institute.

The event is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, September 22 and 23 at the Princeton Club of New York, 15 West 43rd Street, New York City. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday.

The Corporate Counsel Institute will be combined with the Corporate Counsel Section's Ethics for Corporate Counsel program.

Among the issues the faculty will address are:

Employment Law Issues. Corporate counsel are constantly challenged to reduce litigation costs, while human resources executives are challenged to improve employee relations. This session will focus on the increasing use of in-house alternative dispute resolution. A panel of three corporate counsels will discuss the subject in detail and share their experiences from conception to implementation of an ADR program.

In-House Compliance Programs/ Corporate Governance. Hot topics in this area will be discussed by a panel including a leading law school professor and a practitioner from a national law firm. Successful in-house programs will be analyzed.

Law Department Management. The unique role of the in-house counsel as a business person will be discussed in detail within the overall theme of Client Needs and Service. Scheduled to present is a principal of a legal consulting firm. In addition, a major provider of E-billing and related services will present on this growing trend in corporate law departments.

The program chair is Jay L. Monitz, divisional vice president and assistant general counsel, Federated Department Stores, Inc. Among the speakers will be Steven C. Bennett, Jones Day; Matthew V. Gillis, vice president of client services, TyMetrix, Inc., and Nancy McCready Higgins, executive vice president and chief ethics officer, MCI.
