To encourage greater participation in pro bono programs and to offer attorneys more information on the wide range of pro bono experiences available outside New York City, the New York State Bar Association's Department of Pro Bono Affairs has released an updated edition of Pro Bono Opportunities: A Guide for Lawyers Outside New York City.
The state bar has a long-standing tradition of advocating for equal access to legal representation for the poor, including encouraging attorneys to donate 20 hours per year in service to clients who cannot afford to hire an attorney.
The guide, first published in 1996, highlights 30 of the more than 100 programs established to assist low-income clients in need of legal services. The description of each program contains information on such topics as: the type of services provided, geographic area served, training offered, availability of CLE credit and malpractice insurance coverage.
