Managing a successful law firm or legal department in the new millennium is a daunting task. Management must be concerned with both the practice of law and the business of law. To help make attorneys better able to deal with this process, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI) this month is offering a CLE seminar titled Managing a Legal Workforce Without Running Afoul of Employment Law & Ethical Duties.
The program will be presented at four locations, on Monday, June 14 at the Conference Center at Mellon, 501 Grant Street, Pittsburgh; on Tuesday, June 15 at the PBI Conference Center, 5080 Ritter Road, Mechanicsburg, PA; on Tuesday, June 22 at the CLE Conference Center, Wanamaker Building, Juniper Street, Philadelphia, and on Wednesday, June 23 at the Montgomery County Bar Association, 100 West Airy Street, Norristown, PA.
This course addresses the hottest issues facing leadership and management in law firms and law departments for 2004, including those that involve attorneys, employees, non-equity partners, temporary attorneys, legal assistants and staff.
The course planner is Deborah Weinstein, Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC. Other speakers will include Ellen Freedman, Pennsylvania Bar Association; James P. Kimmel Jr., Cite The Law, Inc.; Michael L. Temin, WolfBlock, and James Seaman, Eckert Seamans.
Some of the discussion topics the panelists will address include:
Avoiding legal liability arising from management decisions involving both the duty of professional responsibility and employment law;
Ethical duties arising from the conduct of attorneys and staff when leadership knows or suspects substance abuse, depression or related issues;
Meeting the ethical duty to supervise while avoiding potential liability for negligent supervision, negligent retention, harassment, discrimination, and other causes of action;
Legal and ethical duties concerning outsourcing, temporary staffing and off-shoring;
Defending employee lawsuits before they are filed.
Each session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
