Joint Meeting Of NYSBA SectionsWill Examine Juries In Commercial Cases

The Corporate Counsel and Commercial and Federal Litigation sections of the New York State Bar will hold a joint spring meeting in Saratoga Springs, New York the weekend of Friday-Sunday, May 13-15.

The focus of the meeting will be to examine the role of the jury in commercial cases. The program will also include an update on antitrust developments of interest to in-house counsel and commercial litigators.

The program will be held at the historic Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, located on the grounds of the Saratoga State Park.

The spring meeting's program chair is Stephen P. Younger of Patterson, Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP in New York City. The chair of the Corporate Counsel Section is Mitchell F. Borger, assistant general counsel of Federated Department Stores.

The program will begin with a dinner on Friday evening, which will have as a keynote speaker, Dennis Drasco, co-chair of the ABA's American Jury Project. On Saturday morning, the program will discuss how juries perceive corporations and how best to select a jury in a commercial case. With the assistance of a prominent jury consultant, a mock jury presentation and deliberation will be held in a commercial case. Spouses and guests will be invited to serve as mock jurors.

On Saturday evening, the annual Robert L. Haig award for distinguished public service will be presented to Hon. Bob Kerrey, co-chair of the 9/11 Commission, at a dinner at the hotel.

On Sunday morning, the presentation on the jury in commercial cases will continue with a discussion of electronic techniques for communicating to juries. The program will conclude that morning with a review of developments in antitrust litigation.
