On Thursday, October 14, a new series of "Corporate Governance and Compliance Readiness Seminars" will kick off in the Council Room of the University Club, New York City. Co-sponsored by The Greater New York Chapter of ACC-A, McKenna Long & Aldridge, leading corporations and a variety of legal service providers, it will actively involve leading general counsels in a discussion of the changing needs of corporate legal departments in a post-Enron world.
The keynote address will be given by Bill McDonough, chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. In addition to an array of distinguished panelists, other speakers will include Tom Baxter, executive vice president and general counsel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and president of the Greater New York Chapter of Association of Corporate Counsel-America and Bill Ide of McKenna Long & Aldridge, a past president of the American Bar Association, former general counsel of Monsanto, and Fellow of the Conference Board's Directors' Institute. Mr. Ide will also serve as moderator.
The importance of this first seminar will be reinforced by extensive coverage in a Special Report published in the September 2004 issue of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel (MCC). Both the seminar and the Special Report will highlight the need for corporate counsel to take appropriate steps to meet the new levels of demand for their corporate governance and compliance services in the post-Enron era, including their increased compliance oversight responsibility, meeting Sarbanes-Oxley and Sentencing Guideline requirements, and assisting officers, directors and the corporate legal function to meet the enhanced expectations of the public, regulators and law makers. The objective is to supply general counsel with information to justify their need for the status and resources required to discharge their new responsibilities under Sarbanes-Oxley, the Sentencing Guidelines, state law and the ethical rules.
The seminar will take place from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. at the University Club, One West 54th Street, New York City, and will include continental breakfast, lunch and cocktails. There is no registration fee or other charge for the seminar and CLE credits will be available.
